Artists’ Guesthouse “Romanovo” offers you a unique opportunity to penetrate into Russian’s province heart, to breathe its calming air and to meet Russian history.
The Artists’ House “ROMANOVO” is located in a small town named Romanoff on the left bank of Tutaev city. It is a very beautiful place on the Volga River, 300 kilometres from Moscow and 36 kilometres to the North-West from Yaroslavl. Romanoff has always attracted artistic people. A famous Russian Academician Ligatchev named the wide water’s spaces and the small Volga river’s towns as “the union of Arts”. Indeed, you must be surprised by its abundance of the green, its canopy of churches, goats and cats on the side of the roads, wooden houses with carved ornaments around the windows and the vast water space of Volga.

The Artists’ Guesthouse “Romanovo” was founded in the ancient villa of a rich merchant Dmitry Velikorecky. The villa was built before the Revolution of 1917. Apart from his trading in Romanovo, Dmitry Velikorecky had close commercial relationships with St. Petersburg. They say that, he possessed such of fortune that his villa was built in two weeks. Velikorecky was different from other Romanovo merchants. He was a highly cultivated person and had a noble way of life. He had four children who received a good education, played piano and sang. In general, Velikorecky's family liked singing; that is why they often provided accommodation for religious singers who came to sing in Romanovo for church services. One of Velikorecky’s daughters lived in the villa until seventieth of twentieth century. After that the house changed owners several times, and, from the middle of ninetieth, became empty and started to decay as well as many other ancient Romanovo’s villas during the post-Perestroika period. The house could have fallen into ruin if a miracle hadn’t taken place. It happened on the day, when the house was visited by Liliya Petrovna Slavinskaya, the director of the French-Russian gallery Les Oreades in Moscow. In spite of house’s terrible condition, she decided to buy it. She was dreaming about realizing her old personal project: create on the bank of the Volga a beautiful and cosy place where it would be possible to practise artistic activity and rest at the same time. Many people tried to dissuade her: the restoration of this house required huge efforts. Still, the belief in her forces and her selflessness helped Liliya Slavinskaya to overcome all difficulties. A colossal restoration work has been undertaken for ten years. Its main part is finished today. The ancient villa of the merchant Velikorecky got its second life. The rooms are full again of movement, heat, piano music, walls are decorated by paintings and many other things that adorn the house, they gladden the eye and help to believe in Regenerations.

Romanovo: ancient town into the heart of “Gold Russian Ring”.
Artists’ Guesthouse “Romanovo” is located in the city of Tutaev The River Volga divides Tutaev in two parts, between which there is no bridge. The connection is provided by private small motor’s boats and a big ship used for auto’s transportation. The left bank of Tutaev is, in reality, the ancient town Romanovo. The right bank is the ancient town Borisoglebsk. Art House was founded in Romanovo, on the left bank of Volga river. From a practical point of view, Romanovo possesses one important feature. In spite of its visible “ruralness”, it remains a city with an adequate developed infrastructure: there are several shops, a pharmacy, a hospital, post office, city’s cantina, cinema and other services characteristic of a city. Therefore, a modern visitor falling into this “other space-time” shouldn’t have the impression of being completely separated from his usual environment. Tutaev (Romanovo and Borisoglebsk) is also attractive by its situation, because a visit there can become an intermediate or terminal point for a big trip of “Gold Russian Ring”, which is a famous itinerary connecting historical towns and cities to the North-West of Moscow. If you want to visit St. Petersburg, the way from nearby Yaroslavl will take as much of the time as from Moscow. The train which leaves from the Yaroslavl-main station approximately at 10 o’clock p.m. arrives in St. Petersburg the next morning at 9 o’clockShortly about the history of creation of the Artists’ Guesthouse “Romanovo”.
